The Knights of Columbus
Founded in 1882 by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, the Knights of Columbus initially focused on the protection of those on the margins of society — particularly the widows and orphans of departed brother Knights.
Out of this mission of mutual aid grew the largest Catholic fraternal benefit society in the world. True to its principle of charity, the Knights of Columbus donated in its last fraternal year more than $177.5 million and 75 million service hours to charitable causes.
The Knights of Columbus also counts the following successes:
- Over 1.9 million members
- More than $100 billion of insurance in force
- Approximately $24 billion in assets including $6 billion in annuity deposits
- Achieved, and maintains, the highest financial strength rating of a U.S. insurer from Standard & Poor’s (AA+) and a Superior rating from A.M. Best (A+)
- Named a World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute for five consecutive years
